Insurance Companies Bad For You, Your State, And The Nation Under Current Law
Let's say you break your wife's favorite antique lamp at home. You have 3 choices, don't fix it, fit it half way, or fix it all of the way. You could also try to run away but your wife will notice that the lamp is missing. So if you're a decent person, even if you can't afford it you'll probably save up until you can and have the lamp fixed. The original value of the lamp is not what's important the fact that you made a mistake and now must own up to it is. If you don't own up to the mistake and at least try to repair it then you're a scumbag but what if you had a friend that was really scary that you could have threaten your wife instead. Yeah a really big scary friend that would give your wife the salvage value of the lamp and tell her that she doesn't want to mess with him and bring up that the lamp is actually more valuable. Most of us would say that that isn't right. That we wouldn't do a thing like that to a stranger much less our own family but we let insurance companies do that everyday. In fact we have laws that allow them to do that. The insurance company is only responsible for the salvage value of the vehicle and if you try to take their client to small claims court to get the money out of him that he owes you they will try to protect him/her from having to pay up. For example if you own a 1985 Buick that is in near mint condition and some jerk runs into it and then runs away and the car is sound except that it needs a headlight assembly the car is only valued at around 850 dollars. Now the damage is $1250 so you say ok well I'll take the guy who caused this damage to court over the remaining value and fix the car in the meantime. Well if you accept the insurance settlement you're also accepting their terms and the most they're going to offer you is 750 because they will say that the car isn't worth as much. Now if you're driving something like this around it's probably because you can't afford anything else and it's probably also your primary means of transportation but the insurance company, who took a gamble in the first place, not only isn't reponsible for paying you even up to the amount their insurerd is insured for they're only responsible for the salvage amount by my states' law anyway. So basically this creates a situation where poor people will always be screwed by rich, powerful, insurance companies so the insurance companies can increase their profits. This is a nationwide and industry wide problem. It also creates a situation where unsafe cars will get back on the road. Furthermore it just isn't fair. Insurance companies make their money becaue most people don't get into accidents very often. They are taking a gamlbe in the first place. The individual and the insurance company should be responsible for the damage that they have caused. Now I think any logical person would say that that is fair, but the problem is that insurance companies have investors who want a higher bottom line. They have congressmen friends. So most of the States have created this rediculious situation where the insurance companies can pay as little as possible on claims so that their investors can make the most. The rich get rich and the congressemen get paid. I actually wrote to my congressmen at all levels about my recent experience with this and they won't even touch it with a 10 foot pole. It makes you wonder. Who are they working for? Well they're working for their investments before the people and in that case they should not be congressmen. Only in a corrupt government could someone come up with a law that allows rich people to screw over poor people in the name of profit and call it democratic. It's a gamble, the insurance company sometimes looses, but how come they don't loose it all like anyone else that takes a gamble?
